Starting in the late 1950s and running through 1969, the Soviet Union and the United States of America engaged in a running battle for dominance in the next frontier: space. Known as the Space Race, the world’s two great superpowers engaged in a struggle to take the lead in developing space-based technology.
Although the United States would definitively win the Space Race in 1969, the Soviet Union landed the first punches in this titanic clash. The launch of Sputnik, the world’s first satellite, was matched in 1961 by the Soviet Union’s success in sending the first human into orbit.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to orbit planet Earth and he is depicted in the obverse design of the 2021 1 oz Colorized Germania Interkosmos Gagarin Orbital Silver Round. He is shown here in the foreground in his spacesuit, with his launch craft in the background and a depiction of Earth included.
The State Emblem of the Soviet Union is found in the reverse design of 2021 Colorized Germania Interkosmos Orbital Silver Rounds. Both sides of the round have beautiful red colorization with selective plating layers of gold, palladium, and ruthenium. In particular, the reverse has a full, red colorization throughout the background with gold-plating on the State Emblem designs. The obverse has gold-plating on the figure of Gagarin and planet Earth, palladium on the orbital craft, and ruthenium throughout the background representative of Space. The red colorization is around the rim on the obverse.
These 2021 1 oz Colorized Germania Interkosmos Gagarin Orbital Silver Rounds are available to purchase with a protective acrylic capsule and a Certificate of Authenticity. Each round is edge-lettered with an individual serial number out of 607, the maximum mintage for this version of the rounds.
