Introduced in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo coin was the US Mint’s first-ever 24-karat gold coin. Enshrined in law as an annual release coin a decade later in 2016, the American Gold Buffalo enters the 2020s with 15 years of consistent production behind it and a beautiful design plucked from US history. Today, 2021 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins are available to you from JM Bullion with MintID packaging.
Coin Highlights:
American Gold Buffalo Coins have designs inspired by the historic Buffalo Nickel. The images on that coin were created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. The designs were submitted to the Treasury and US Mint during the administration of President William Howard Taft and accepted for use on the nickel. The design was used until 1938 and was the last design before the current images of President Thomas Jefferson and Monticello were added to the nickel.
All of these 2021 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins come with a sealed CertiCard from MintID. The coins are housed in a capsule at the center and the tamper-evident CertiCard has a unique AES 128-bit encrypted NFC microchip. The microchip was designed by MintID to provide instant access to a cloud-based profile on each of the individual coins. You can access that profile using the NFC technology in your smartphone. With the MintID app and your smartphone, you can simply tap the NFC symbol on the CertiCard and connect directly to the profile. Please note your smartphone must be running iOS 13.0 or later and Android 4.2 or later to work with the MintID app.
In the obverse design of the 2021 American Gold Buffalo is a depiction of a stoic indigenous figure. Fraser is said to have used the facial features of three separate tribal elders of the early 20th century for inspiration in his design. The right-profile portrait depicts a figure with braided hair and feathers woven into his hair. The word “Liberty” is found on this side of the coin, as well as a date mark and the “F” initials of Fraser.
For the reverse imagery on 2021 American Gold Buffalos, the US Mint features Fraser’s other design from the Buffalo Nickel. Here, an American bison is shown atop a small mound of dirt with its body presented in left-profile relief. Fraser used Black Diamond, a bison residing at the Central Park Zoo, as inspiration for his design on the coin.
