The 1 oz silver coins in the Proof Music Legends Series are the only coins in the collection to feature two additional, distinctive design elements. In the case of the David Bowie release, you will notice a colorized lightning bolt behind the singer. Additionally, there is an edge inscription on the coin that reads “The Stars Are Never Far Away.”
Obverse design elements of the 2020 Proof British Music Legends David Bowie Silver Coin include a fifth-generation bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Jody Clark in 2015, this effigy of the Queen is a right-profile portrait that shows Her Majesty at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
Reverse imagery on the 2020 1 oz Proof British Music Legends David Bowie Silver Coin is also designed by Clark. Bowie was considered by many to be a chameleon, constantly changing his appearance and his musical vibe to fit the many decades he worked across in his lifetime. The portrait of Bowie shown here is said to have been inspired by his time living and working in Berlin.
The David Bowie coin release is the third in this series and follows the debut issue honoring the rock band Queen, as well as the second design celebrating Elton John.
