Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Coins have proven very popular to date at the Perth Mint. The 2018 and 2019 coins had the same mintage of 50,000 coins applied to this 2020 release, and both of those coins sold out completely at the mint. While this is the 7^th release of the series, it is just the 5^th design to feature in the collection.

Former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti creates the wedge tail eagle designs for the Perth Mint. His debut design in 2014 was repeated in 2015. He then created a fresh design in 2016 that was again repeated on the 2017 coin. However, the 2018 and 2019 coins have each had a unique wedge tail eagle image, as does the new 2020 coin.

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted in right-profile relief on the obverse side of the 2020 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin. Her Majesty is seen here in the sixth-generation effigy to appear on Australian coins. It is based on Jody Clark’s fifth-generation design created in 2015 for the Royal Mint of England. It is the first on an Australian coin to include the Queen’s neck and shoulders since 1966.

The wedge tail is the largest bird of prey on the Australian continent and can also be found nearby in southern New Guinea, in portions of Papua New Guinea, and in Indonesia.
