The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 with just a 1 oz gold coin available. The 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf wasnt introduced until 1986.
On the obverse of the 2020 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen to feature on Canadian currency. It was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with no crown on her head.
The reverse face of 2020 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins features the sugar maple leaf. This iconic design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the RCM to use on the first Gold Maple Leafs issued. The design is now used on the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin as well.
Starting in 2014, the RCM introduced new security measures to the design of its major bullion coins. The reverse side also has a micro-engraved maple leaf privy with the date mark 20 inside the center of the maple leaves.
