The 1/2 oz coin debuted in the series starting in 1986. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf series evolved three times early on in its existence.
The first change came in November 1982 when the purity of the coins was increased from .999 to .9999 fine gold. At that same time, a second change was made by adding the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins to the collection. The third big change early came in 1986 with the addition of these 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins.
On the reverse of 2019 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins is the image of a sugar maple leaf. The nation’s iconic symbol dates back to the 18th century as a symbol of French Canadian provinces and has featured on the Gold Maple Leaf coinage since its 1979 debut. The maple leaf is surrounded by engravings denoting the nation of issue, purity, weight, and metal content.
The obverse of 2019 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation design on Canadian coinage and debuted in 2003. It was created by Susanna Blunt who is just the second Canadian artist to ever design a monarch’s effigy for national currency.
