Included in the designs of this set are the moon phases known as the New Moon, Waxing Crescent, Third Quarter, and Full Moon. The New Moon design has a full layer of Ruthenium to depict the darkened appearance of the moon in this phase. The Third Quarter Moon is split vertically by the Ruthenium, with the left half shaded and the right half bright in its original silver. The Full Moon features its natural, bright silver throughout with Ruthenium applied to the Sugar Maple Leaf design.
On the reverse of all 2018 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins, you’ll find the sugar maple leaf design. Created in 1979 by Walter Ott, it has featured on all Canadian Maple Leaf coins since the introduction of the Gold Maple Leaf in that same year. The obverse of the coins includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in a fourth-generation design created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
