The Bird of Paradise is known by two names in Australia. Found throughout the rainforests of eastern Australia and the state of Queensland, the bird is known to local Yidinji people as the duwuduwu, while Australians likely know it as Victoria’s riflebird.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Gold Bird of Paradise Coin is the image of Victoria’s riflebird. The species got the name courtesy of Scottish naturalist John Macgillivray who spotted the species in 1848. He named it after the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria, inspired by the similarity between the bird’s plumage and the colors of the uniforms of the Queen’s Riflemen Brigades.
The obverse of the 2018 Australian Gold Bird of Paradise coin features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in a fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
