Somalia Elephant coins originated in 1999 as the Zambian Elephant Series from the Bavarian State Mint. The coins were not particularly popular at the time, with low mintage figures and a lower silver fineness. In 2004 the program shifted to Somalia and emerged as the Somalia Silver Elephant collection.
However, it was the Great Recession that really helped this coin program surge to popularity. Previous, lower mintage caps were removed and the coins rotating annual designs helped propel in the coins to greater prominence. It doesn’t hurt either that in recent years the series has expanded to feature a platinum option, increased silver content to .9999 purity, and added fractional-weight silver bullion options as well.
Each 2018 1 Kilo Somalia Silver Elephant Coin listed here is in BU condition. Coins in this condition may feature minor flaws from the production process, but show no signs of wear and tear. These minor flaws are limited to contact marks, breaks in the luster, and spotted surfaces.
On the obverse of the Somalia Silver Elephant Coin you’ll find the latest African elephant design in the series. The largest and heaviest land mammal in the world, this depiction of the elephant offers a close look at its face as it raises its massive trunk toward the edges of the coin’s design field.
The reverse of all 2018 1 Kilo Somalia Silver Elephant Coins features the coat of arms for Somalia. This design has a single star set against horizontal stripes on a shield, with leopards on either side and crossed spears below draped in a ribbon and fern leaves in the background. The coin’s nation of issue, year of issue, and face value are featured on this side.
Opened in the 12th century, the Bavarian State Mint is one of the world’s oldest operating mint facilities. Today it is a state-owned entity of the Free State of Bavaria and located in the city of Munich.
