The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins debuted in 1979 with just a 1 oz weight available. From 1979 to 1982, these coins were issued in that sole weight with .999 pure gold content. In November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint both increased the gold purity of the coins and the variety of weights available.
First up in the addition of weights was the ¼ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, which debuted in earnest in 1983 along with the new 1/10 oz weight. Over the course of time, the mint has added various other weights to the series and removed only one. In 1994, a 1/15 oz coin was offered that was removed again in 1995.
The obverse of the 2018 ¼ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin includes the image of Queen Elizabeth II. British monarchs have long featured on Canadian coinage, both commemorative and circulation. Her Majesty has appeared since 1952, and this is the fourth-generation effigy of Elizabeth II to feature on Canadian coins. It was created by Susanna Blunt in 2003 and is the only one of the Queen without a crown.
On the reverse of all ¼ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins you’ll notice the sugar maple leaf. The official emblem of Canada, the maple leaf appears on the national flag and countless government agency seals. Adopted in the mid-19th century as a symbol, the sugar maple leaf features on all Canadian Maple Leaf coins including the gold, silver, platinum, and palladium versions.
Your 2018 ¼ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in BU condition have no signs of wear and tear, but are not perfect specimens either. There is the potential for flaws when striking coins, which includes possible breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.

“I usually always…….OK, always buy the little gold bars over coins. I’ve always wanted a Canadian coin so I bought this instead of my normal bar. I like it lots. Very pretty coin made up of quad 9 of the pure stuff. A dime will fit perfectly in the border of the coin to give you an idea of how big it is. I think I’ll stick to bars so I don’t have to pay for legal tender and the design the coins have to offer. Bars come protected in plastic and usually signed by a guy who took “how to sign your name like a doctor”, classes. Glad I finally bought one, I love Canadian and Australian offerings. I love JM for allowing me to throw in 3 pieces of silver with the order. I did business with others, but I now homestead with JM,”
