The Proof American Gold Eagle is the official collector’s version of the nation’s gold coin. Struck each year by the United States Mint, these coins are highly sought after by serious collectors. Today, the 2017 ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is available to you online courtesy of JM Bullion.

The Proof American Gold Eagle was issued the first year the bullion coins were in 1986, but the fractional weight coins in the Gold Eagle series were not issued right away. While the bullion coins debuted with all four weights, the proof coins would have to wait.
These ½ oz coins were the first proof coins issued in the fractional weights in 1987. One year later in 1988 the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins. Although immensely popular at first given its balance between size and affordability, the ½ oz coin has lost some of its allure to the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz options over the last three decades.
Each 2017 ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle available to you here today is a PF70 coin according to the NGC. Coins with this certification have full, original mint luster and lack any type of detracting flaws.
The beauty of these ½ oz Gold Eagles is captured precisely in the UCAM designation. UCAM stands for ultra-cameo, and identifies a coin with a strong, frosted matte finish to the design sets that is visually offset by the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse of the Proof American Gold Eagle is the image of Liberty that was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and originally featured on the brilliant $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty image is widely considered the greatest American coin design of all time.
The reverse of the 2017 ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle features the family of bald eagles created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, and featured exclusively on the American Gold Eagle series of coins. Busiek is an artist and sculptor who has completed numerous public works for the US government, as well as private works for art collectors.
