The coins that these are supposed to represent were originally created in 1617. The coins were known as the Dutch lion daalder. Today, we call the restrike versions Lion Dollars because of the stunning lion design on the reverse.
On the obverse of these coins, you will see the image of a knight standing with a shield. The shield bears the image of a lion in the rampant position. You will also find the engravings “MO. ARG. PRO. CONFOE. BELG,” which is short for “Moneta Argentea Provinciarum Confoederatum Belgicarum,” meaning “Silver money of the Province of the Netherlands.” You will also see the letters “TRA,” which represent Utrecht. A beadwork design surrounds the design.
The reverse face of each coin features the same heraldic lion design that is found on the shield on the other side of the coin. The large lion is shown reared up on its hind legs. A beadwork pattern also surrounds the image of the lion, separating it from the engravings “2017” and the motto of the United Provinces, which is “CONFIDENS. DNO. NON. MOVETVR,” which means “Who trusts in the Lord is not moved.”
