The first-ever 24-karat gold coin from the United States Mint was the American Gold Buffalo. Based upon the historic Buffalo Nickel design and unveiled in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo coin has a limited maximum mintage each year and was, for a time, the only 24-karat gold coin available to the public from the US Mint. The 2017 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin is available today in near-perfect condition from JM Bullion.

Introduced in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo was the first .9999 pure gold coin struck by the United States Mint. Its inspiring design is based upon the original Buffalo Nickel, released for the first time by the US Mint in 1913. James Earle Fraser was the man responsible for the design of the popular Buffalo Nickel.
On the obverse is the right-profile portrait of a tribal leader, with the word “Liberty” engraved on the right-hand side. This image appears just as it did on Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. The reverse includes the image of Black Diamond, as well as the coin’s weight, metal content, face value, and purity.
All 2017 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins in this listing are in near-perfect condition. Coins with a Mint State 70 grade from the NGC exhibit full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These detractions are limited in scope and range to minuscule hairlines or contact marks found outside the primary focal areas of the coin.
Early Release coins feature a label that identifies the coins as having arrived for certification within the initial 30 days of the 2017 release date set by the United States Mint. These coins must arrive at the NGC depository or an approved third-party location within that timeframe to qualify for the designation.
All American Gold Buffalo coins are struck by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility, the same facility tasked with producing the American Silver and American Gold Eagle bullion coins.
