The release of three gold bullion commemorative coins in 2016 marked the centennial of an important overhaul date for American coinage. From 1892 to 1915, three of the most common denominations of American currency featured the same obverse and reverse designs. The Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar were all redesigned in 1892 by 6^th US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, but these designs showed their age by 1916. Adolph A. Weinman and Hermon Atkins MacNeil submitted what would become the winning designs for fresh images on these coins, with MacNeil’s submission landing on the US Quarter.

On the obverse of 2016 1/4 oz American Gold Standing Liberty Quarters is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This work of art shows the figure of Liberty standing in the gap of a wall with an olive branch in her right hand and a shield bearing the US national shield on its surface in her left hand. This design came about at a time when Americans desperately desired to stay out of World War I in Europe. Liberty’s olive branch symbolizes the American desire for peace, while the shield is directed eastward as a sign of its willingness to defend its interests.

The reverse side of the 2016-W American Gold Standing Liberty Quarter comes with a vision of the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is shown in right-profile relief soaring through the sky with its wings flapped upward in the breeze.
