Star Trek debuted with The Original Series on American television in 1966, but it only lasted for three years before being cancelled. The series would later find a cult following through syndication, which eventually led to the release of four future television series. Among the most popular characters from the original cast was Scotty.
Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott was the technology officer onboard the USS Enterprise, and the technology that he used in The Original Series and subsequent feature films inspired some of the world’s future technological advances. Among them are the mobile phones that are used by billions around the globe today.
The reverse side of every 2016 1/2 oz $10 Canadian Silver Scotty Star Trek coin features the colorized image of Scotty from the feature film. Played by Canadian actor Jim Doohan, Scotty is accompanied by the image of the communicator that inspired the modern cell phone.
On the obverse of every coin in this series you’ll find the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this is the third Canadian depiction of Her Majesty created for Royal Canadian Mint coins. The 2016 1/2 oz $10 Canadian Silver Scotty Star Trek coin is the second release in a planned series of four.
The Royal Canadian Mint is the official sovereign mint of Canada, and was founded in 1908 by the ruling British to enhance the independence movement of Canada and produce precious metals from the stores found in the Yukon Territories.
