Thomas Jefferson once said that “the passage of the Potomac River through the Blue Ridge Mountains is perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.” He was speaking about the views from Harpers Ferry at the confluence of the Shenandoah River and Potomac River in what is today West Virginia. The historic significance of this region is the reason it was chosen to represent the state on the 2016 5 oz Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Coin, now available from JM Bullion.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is named after Robert Harper, who obtained the land from the Virginia state legislature in 1751. The ferry service he operated from the point where two major East Coast rivers combine eventually sparked the growth of an entire town around the spot.
Before the Civil War, the site gained further notoriety as John Brown led an armed group in an effort to capture the armory located at Harpers Ferry, an armory established by then-General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
On the obverse side of all America the Beautiful quarters is the image of President George Washington. Created in 1932 by John Flanagan, based on a 1786 sculpture from William Cousins, the image is commonly found on US circulation quarters.
The reverse side of the 2016 5 oz Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Silver coin bears the image of the oldest building still standing in the park today, an old firehouse known as John Brown’s Fort. It was here that Brown resisted for a time the efforts of US Marines to recapture the armory.
Each America the Beautiful coin is struck by the United States Mint at one of three facilities; the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, or San Francisco Mint. Only a small portion of the coins in the program are struck in San Francisco, with production evenly split for the most part between Denver and Philadelphia.
