The Australian Norse Gods silver coins series started, appropriately, with a design honoring Odin, the father of gods in Norse mythology. The series continues with its second design, featuring the image of one of his sons, Thor.
Each of the 2016 2 oz Australian Norse Gods Thor Silver High Relief Coins in this product listing started as a rimless blank. The antique finish applied to the coin adds warmth and depth to the design characteristics, and when combined with the rimless blank gives the finished coin an altogether unique appearance.
The obverse side of the coin features the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. It is accompanied by engravings that identify the Queen’s name, the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as the year of issue, nation of issue, and face value.
On the reverse you’ll find the depiction of Thor raising his hammer to strike in anger. Thor is well known as the God of Thunder, but is more generally associated with storms, lightning, and strength. His father is the god Odin, and his mother the Earth goddess Fyorgyn.
These coins come from the Perth Mint, Australia’s oldest operating mint facility. Opened in 1898, today it is owned by the state of Western Australia and not affiliated with the sovereign Royal Australian Mint.
