When the original Star Wars films came out in the late 1970s and early 1980s, fans lined up around the block to catch a glimpse of George Lucas’ universe. The prequel films released at the turn of the 21st century didn’t garner quite the same response, but if the reaction to Star Wars: The Force Awakens is any indication, fans old and new are turning out in droves for their beloved franchise.
In the first release, we’re introduced to a new heroine in the form of Rey, a tough and self-sufficient survivor who collects scrap from a starship graveyard on her desert-planet home of Jakku. It is here that she discovers some old favorites from the original films and discovers a force within herself she never knew existed.
On the reverse of the 2016 1 oz Niue Silver Star Wars Rey Coin are three images of Rey from the feature film. In the only silver image, we see her cloaked in protective gear to cover against sand as she speeds across the desert landscape. The two colorized images show a close-up image of Rey and a full-length shot of her character with the Jakku sky in the background.
The obverse of all coins in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens series include the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s image is featured along with engravings of Her Name, the year of issue, face value, and nation of issue for the coin.
New Zealand Mint has launched two Star Wars-themed silver series in recent weeks and months. The Force Awakens series has just three coins to date, with Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma preceding this Rey coin. Another Star Wars series features images of characters from the original films and is known as the Classic Series.
