The god Tyr is considered the god of war and victory in Norse mythology. His origins are shrouded in mystery, with some tales saying that he was actually the father of the gods, not Odin. Other stories, which are more broadly accepted, peg him as one of the sons of Odin. Tyr is often portrayed as being one-handed, and is associated with law and heroic glory as well.
Each 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse God Tyr coin in this JM Bullion listing is an ultra-high-relief proof coin. These coins have obverse and reverse designs with 3D physical depth and feel, a physical feature not found on any other type of proof coin. The desired effect is achieved by striking the blank up to nine times using more intense pressure than the production process of bullion or proof coins.
The antique finish found on these coins gives them the appearance of being much older than they truly are. Antique finishing on a modern coin add warm, subtle accents to the coin’s major design features.
On the reverse face is the image of Tyr in full war gear, and he is even depicted with his right hand missing, a facet just visible on the arm holding his shield. Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait is featured on the obverse.
Germany’s BH Mayer Mint was founded in 1871 as a privately-owned, family-operated mint. Today it continues its tradition as a fifth-generation minting facility responsible for some of the finest gold and silver precious metal products available today.
