Mexican Silver Libertad coins were introduced for the first time in 1982 as a bullion product only. It was originally available only in a 1 oz. weight, but as of the early 1990s the program has expanded significantly for the silver version of these popular coins.
Beginning in 1991, the bullion program expanded to include four fractional-weight coins, and further expanded in 1996 to feature a 2 oz and 5 oz coin. The first Proof Mexican Silver Libertads were introduced in 1983, with fractional-weight coins made available in 1992, and the 2 oz and 5 oz coins added in 1996. Today, there is also a proof-like coin, available since 2002 and offered only in a 1 Kilogram weight.
On the obverse face of all 2015 1/20 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad coins features the image from the national coat of arms. In the design, a Mexican eagle does battle with a serpent. The image was developed during the nation’s struggle with Spanish colonialism, which culminated in the War of Independence in the 1820s. The phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” is engraved above.
The reverse features a representation of the statue of Winged Victory from Mexico City. Known as the Angel of Independence, she symbolizes the nation’s successful struggle for freedom against Spain. This side also includes the weight, metal content, year of issue, and purity of the coin, along with the “OM” mint mark from the Mexican Mint.
The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, making it the oldest operational mint in the Western Hemisphere. It is controlled by Banco de Mexico, and is also responsible for the production of circulation coinage and paper bank notes.
