This past year, the Royal Canadian Mint released the first coin of its “Birds of Prey” series, the 2014 Canadian Silver Peregrine Falcon Coin. Each one ounce coin was made from 99.99% pure silver and currently holds a face value of $5 CAD. They measure 38 mm in diameter and 3.29 mm in width. Because less than a million of these coins were minted, this limited edition item has become a highly sought after piece among collectors.
Every coin in this series has been designated an MS68 grade by the NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation). Coins with an MS68 grade are in exceptionally good condition and are free of any visible hairline marks. However, there may be three to four minor contact marks, none of which will appear on any of the primary design elements. To prevent any damage to their assigned mint state, each individual coin has been kept sealed in its NGC certified plastic case.
The “Birds of Prey” series offers a close up look at the predatory birds of Canada. This first coin in the series depicts the peregrine falcon as it prepares to make its attack. From the strong angles of its flapping wings to its fully extended talons, the dynamic and realistic rendering of this fierce bird makes it appear as though it’s ready to fly off the coin’s surface. On the reverse side, however, viewers are presented with a still portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which serves as reminder of Canada's former status under British rule.
The 2014 Silver Peregrine Falcon Coin offers a stunning portrayal of one of Canada’s most notable creatures. Because these coins are only available to us in limited quantities, they may not last long. All purchases receive complimentary shipping as well as insurance against theft, loss or damage.
