The United States Mint was authorized to create a coin series commemorating Presidential spouses ranging from Martha Washington down to Barbara Bush. Called the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, it paid tribute to the accomplishments of these historic figures in the chronological order in which they served. The 19th issue in the series was devoted to Lucy Hayes, First Lady of President Rutherford B. Hayes from 1877 through 1881. A beloved figure in her day, known also as “Mother Lucy” and eventually as “Lemonade Lucy,” she became one of the most beloved women ever to preside over the White House. The 2011-W 1/2 oz Proof US Mint First Spouse Lucy Hayes Gold Coin celebrates her legacy.

Lucy Hayes was married to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1852 and had a long reputation as a woman of charm and willpower, courage and intellect by the time she became First Lady. For her unstinting morale-building efforts she was nicknamed “Mother Lucy” by the men of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, her husband’s command during the Civil War. A deeply religious abolitionist and advocate of temperance, she was also a popular hostess and organized the first-ever Easter Egg Roll in 1878, with hundreds of children participating.
The 2011-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Lucy Hayes Gold Coin ships in an elegant wooden box along with a Certificate of Authenticity. The coin’s proof finish shows the cameo effect of mirrored background fields contrasting with frosted raised details.
The coin’s obverse field features a portrait of Lucy Hayes, accompanied by the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint along with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “2011,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “19th 1877 – 1881.”
The reverse field features an image of the inaugural Easter Egg Roll in 1878, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “$10,” and “1/2 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”
