The Mexican Gold Libertad coin is the direct successor to the historic gold Centenario coin from the Mexican Mint. The Centenario was originally introduced in the 1920s as the nation celebrated 100 years of freedom from colonial rule, and the Mexican Gold Libertad represents a modern interpretation of that coin. Now, the 2010 ¼ oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is available through JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Mexico introduced the Libertad coin program in 1981 with a gold bullion coin, as well as a silver bullion coin in 1982. The first Proof Mexican Gold Libertad wasn’t struck until 1989, and was only available for one year in a ½ oz weight. The proof gold coins entered regular production in 2004 with the ¼ oz coin, and continued in 2005 with five weights available in total, ranging from 1/20 oz at the smallest to 1 oz at the largest. On an annual basis, the ¼ oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad is the most popular coin in the series.
On the obverse face of the 2010 ¼ oz is the image of the angel of independence. She is featured on the coin as she is seen in Mexico City, standing atop a pillar as the statue of Winged Victory. In the background, the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rise to meet the horizon. The coin’s face value, metal content, year of minting, weight, and purity are also featured on the obverse.
The reverse of each of these proof coins depicts a bald eagle locked in battle with a rattlesnake atop its perch on a cactus. Considered the coat of arms for Mexico, the image is surrounded by a wreath along the bottom and the official name of the nation, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” above.
