Introduced in 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda is one of the precious metals industry’s oldest coin programs. What is notable about the history of the Chinese Gold Panda Series is its groundbreaking approach to the design of its coins. The Gold Panda was the first to feature new designs on one side of the coin each year. Right now, 2003 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2003 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin offered here is individually sealed in plastic. The 2003 release of Gold Pandas was distinctive for two reasons. The most notable of those reasons comes from the design. From 1982 to 2001, the Chinese Mint used new Giant Panda designs each year. However, in 2002 it repeated the design from the 2001 release, a first in program history.
The 2003 Chinese Gold Panda returned the program to its historic approach with a new depiction of the Giant Panda on the reverse. Additionally, this was just the third release of 1 oz Gold Pandas with a revised face value. From 1981 to 2000, the 1 oz Gold Panda had a face value of 100 Yuan, but it was adjusted upward to 500 Yuan in 2001.
Obverse design elements on 2003 1 oz Gold Panda Coins include the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is the central structure in the larger Temple of Heaven Complex in Beijing, a Taoist religious complex that was constructed in the early 15th century.
Reverse visuals on the 2003 Chinese Gold Panda feature the Giant Panda. This unique bear species is native to the central highlands of China and is instantly recognizable with its patches of black-and-white fur. The Giant Panda has been the focus of design for these coins since 1982.
