The Macrodontia cervicornis, otherwise known as the Giant Longhorn Beetle, is one of the largest known specimens of beetle in the world today. It can exceed more than 17 cm in length, with much of that length due to the large mandibles on the creatures. Found throughout the rainforests of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Guianas, the Giant Longhorn Beetle will haunt your dreams.
In fact, the species of beetle gets its name from the binomen of Macrodontia, meaning “long tooth.” The word cervicornis means “deer antler. The male in the species averages 13 to 14 cm long when the mandibles are not included, with females averaging 10 to 11 cm in length.
With the 4th release of the Silver Bug Series, the Intaglio Mint brings the Giant Longhorn Beetle to life with an ultra-high-relief strike and embellished micro-engraved details that reflect the very nature of the insect itself. Fond of the collectible community, Intaglio Mint strikes these rounds on a smaller 39mm format to create a 2 oz silver round with a dramatic tactile experience.
On the obverse of the 2 oz Silver Bug Giant Longhorn Beetle High Relief Silver Round you’ll find the image of that Giant Longhorn Beetle. In the design it is illuminated by the deep, domed radial burst that helps bring the eye’s focus to the bug. It is surrounded by engravings near and dear to the Silverbug community: “All Hail the Silverbug” and “In Silver We Trust.”
The reverse of the Giant Longhorn Beetle High Relief Silver Round features the Intaglio Mint’s official logo. The Romanesque column takes the perfect shape of an “I” and includes the established date of the mint. It features its own radial sunburst around its and a stippled border with markings of the weight, purity, and metal content.
