However, if you purchase multiple pieces, you may wish to remove them from their capsules for stacking purposes. While not necessary, we do advise the wearing of cotton gloves when handling this silver.
In Old English, targe was another name for shield. By the 1700s, it had morphed into the word target. But during the Middle Ages, a targe was commonly used to describe the shield held by a knight in a jousting tournament. During a tournament, a knight might have received extra points if their opponent’s lance broke. As such, the shields were covered with raised trellises, which could snag the lance and cause it to shatter.
These stackers are part of a series that features various legendary shields throughout history. Previous releases included the Shield of Achilles, the Shield of St. Michael the Archangel, and the Shield of Henry II of France. All these releases have been crafted with impressive attention to detail and have been available in both 2 oz and 1 kilo editions.
The obverse and reverse of these Shield Trellised Targe Silver Stackers contain the same design. The obverse is convex, while the reverse is concaved to allow multiple pieces to fit neatly into place when stacked. The design itself contains trellised bands cutting across the shield diagonally in both directions. This forms individual diamond-shaped segments, each of which contains a real fantastic beast. If you look closely, you can make out a lion, horse, griffin, and to-headed eagle. You will also find small dent marks where a jousting stick would have struck the shield.
