Day of the Dead may have an ominous sounding name, but don't let its celebration on October 31st in the United States fool you. Though the Day of the Dead falls on the same day in North America as Halloween, it has nothing to do with frightening people as ghouls and ghosts. Originally known as Dia de Muertos in Spanish, the celebration of the Day of the Dead is not one of fright and horror, but rather honor and life. Central and South American cultures honor the lives of those who have already died by holding large family gatherings, complete with a festive meal. At the end of the day, they gather by the gravesite of their lost loved one to commemorate their life with song and dance.
It is custom on Dia de los Muertos to ornately decorate the graves of the ones who have gone before. Among the most common features used is the so-called sugar skull, or calavera. These representations of the human skull are referred to as a sugar skull because they are often made of edible sugar and used during the Dia de los Muertos festivities.
For this unique 2 oz Monarch Silver Day of the Dead Rose Skull, Monarch Precious Metals has gone all out in its design and finish. The skulls accurately reflect the appearance of common sugar skulls, and even have a distinct dark tone to the antique polish.
