If you are looking for a collection of coins in brilliant uncirculated condition, US Mint Sets are your answer. The coins in these sets are struck by two different branch mints and packaged in separate, sealed cellophane packages. Collectors loved that the 1981 Mint Sets included the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which was available only within the Mint Sets! JM Bullion currently has these 1981 US Mint Sets available for purchase.
Coin Highlights:
The 1981 Mint Sets include 13 uncirculated coins, separated into 2 packages. As with previous years, the package from the Denver Mint has a red border while the Philadelphia Mint package has a blue border. Included in the Denver Mint package is one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Susan B. Anthony Dollar, as well as a Susan B. Anthony Dollar from the San Francisco Mint. Included in the Philadelphia Mint package is one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Susan B. Anthony Dollar. This was the last year that the Anthony Dollar was included in the Set.
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was only minted from 1979 to 1981, when it was halted due to poor acceptance by the public. It did make an appearance again in 1999, but only as a bridge until the new Sacagawea Dollar could be issued. In 1981, the Anthony Dollars were not minted for circulation but rather only to be included in the Mint Sets. The obverse of the Anthony Dollar is a right-facing profile of Susan B. Anthony. The reverse of the coin was retained from the Eisenhower Dollar – an eagle preparing to land on the moon’s surface, clutching an olive branch, with the Earth in the distant background. This is based on the Apollo 11 mission insignia.
Sales of Mint Sets have been steadily increasing since 1977, with sales of over 2 million sets each year. In spite of the $2.00 price increase of the 1981 set, it sold 2,908,145 sets. Other than the Bicentennial Silver 3 Piece Mint Set, 1981 holds the record for the highest Mint Set sales.
