In 1968, the United States Mint resumed production of its coveted US Mint Sets and US Mint Proof Sets. Mint Sets are uncirculated coins and often feature strikes from various mints, while Proof Sets are polished blanks struck by polished dies to create beautiful visuals. Now, 1968 US Mint Sets are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.

From 1965 to 1967, the United States Mint paused its production of US Mint Sets and US Mint Proof Sets. This was the result of massive coin hoarding in the early 1960s. The 90% silver content of coins resulted in the hoarding of circulation coins as silver prices rose, resulting in a shortage of circulation coins.
During that three-year period, the US Mint did issue Special Mint Sets, but did not resume Mint Set and Proof Set production until 1968. The 1968 US Mint Set includes a total of 10 coins in all, with three pennies, two nickels, two dimes, two quarters, and one half dollar.
The 1968 US Mint Set features America’s iconic circulation coin designs. Included in the set are the Lincoln Penny (3), Jefferson Nickel (2), Roosevelt Dime (2), Washington Quarter (2), and Kennedy Half Dollar. The Half Dollar is the only coin with silver content and is a 40% silver coin.
These 1968 US Mint Sets come with sealed cellophane packaging for the coins. One package features two pennies, a nickel, a dime, and a quarter, while the other features one of each of the five denominations of US coinage. The sets may or may not feature the outer shipping envelope. Though the packaging may show wear and tear, all coins remain in uncirculated condition.
The unique combination of denominations results from the inclusion of one denomination from each mint that struck that coin in 1968. As such, there are pennies from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, nickels from Denver and San Francisco, dimes from Philadelphia and Denver, and quarters from Philadelphia and Denver. The Kennedy Half Dollar is a product of the Denver Mint.
