From 1965 to 1967, the United States Mint issued a different type of collectible set for coin enthusiasts. Historically, the US Mint had issued Mint Sets and Proof Sets for collectors, with US Mint Proof Sets dating back to 1936. The Special Mint Set era was brief and intended to fill a void in traditional Mint Set production by the US Mint. Today, 1967 US Special Mint Sets are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
Rampant coin hoarding in the 1960s occurred as a result of the rising price of silver. As the US Mint transitioned away from 90% silver in its dimes, quarters, and half dollars in 1965, the US Mint paused its production of Mint Sets and Proof Sets to backfill circulation coins. However, Special Mint Sets were struck from 1965-1967 to fill this void. A key hallmark of Special Mint Sets is the use of polished blanks and dies, resulting in circulation coins with proof-like visuals.
All 1967 US Special Mint Sets are available with a five coins in total. All five are packaged together in a hard plastic holder with an outer shipper initially offered with all sets. Please note that some sets may show wear and tear on the packaging, as well as the possibility for missing outer shippers. All coins remain in uncirculated condition.
1967 US Special Mint Sets include a Lincoln Penny, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. The penny, nickel, dime, and quarter feature a cupro-nickel alloy, while the Kennedy Half Dollar features a unique 40% silver composition used in this denomination from 1965 to 1970.
