United States Mint Sets of uncirculated and proof coins have long been a popular item from the US Mint. Collectors, in particular, covet mint sets as a catalog of the history of American coin designs. The first US Mint Sets were issued in 1936 and are still issued to this day, with uncirculated, proof, and special sets offered through the history of this series. Right now, 1966 US Special Mint Sets are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each 1966 US Special Mint Set is available to you with five coins in total. All coins are circulation strikes that were never circulated by the US Mint. Each coin bears a 1966 date mark and the five coins are packaged together in a hard plastic holder with an outer shipper included. Please note, some sets may be missing the outer shipper.
The 1966 US Special Mint Set includes the Lincoln Penny, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the recently-released Kennedy Half Dollar. The youngest coin design in the set is the Kennedy Half Dollar, having debuted in 1964. The oldest coin design in the set is the Lincoln Penny, with Lincoln’s bust on the obverse debuting on the penny in 1909 and the reverse image of the Lincoln Memorial debuting in 1959.
The Kennedy Half Dollar is an important coin of note within this set. When the Kennedy Half Dollar debuted in circulation in 1964, it contained 90% silver content, as this was the final year American circulation coins featured silver content. However, Kennedy Half Dollars continued to feature 40% silver in each coin until 1970.
