The story of the Peace Silver Dollar began when the Pittman Act of 1918 sought to revitalize the American silver dollar supply, authorizing the melting down of hundreds of millions of existing silver dollars for bullion sales to Great Britain and the striking of a roughly equivalent number of new silver dollars from the output of American silver mines. The new coin that replaced the iconic Morgan silver dollar was known as the “Peace dollar,” designed to pay tribute to the peace following the Great War, and first minted between the years 1921 and 1928.
