The Peace dollar was first minted from 1921 to 1928, and represented a large-scale effort to renew America’s supply of silver dollars. Created in response to the Pittman Act of 1918, large mintages were coined from silver supplied by American mines to replace older coins that were melted down in order to sell their bullion to Great Britain. With a design that paid tribute to the armistice that had recently ended the Great War, the Peace dollar is today a common presence on the collectors’ market in uncirculated “mint state” grades.
