One of the most unique issues of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Series came in 1908. When the coin was introduced in 1907, the design elements did not include the national motto of In God We Trust. Later added in 1908, not all of the coins the US Mint issued in this series in 1908 included the motto. Now, certified 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available for purchase at JM Bullion.

In 1907, Augustus Saint-Gaudens submitted his redesign for the $20 Gold Double Eagle. Approached directly by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign American coins, Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty image for the $20 Gold Double Eagle remains the most beloved in American history.
When the US Mint began striking Saint-Gaudens’ design, it first attempted to strike the coins with high-relief visuals. That was abandoned in 1907 after just 12,367 coins were struck. In 1908, the US Mint was forced to eventually add the US national motto after public backlash at its exclusion from the 1907 coins. However, millions of coins were issued in 1908 without the motto.
The obverse of the 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin comes with an iconic image of Liberty. Her front-facing figure is shown in full-length relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
On the reverse side of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles is a depiction of the American bald eagle. The eagle is shown gliding through the sky over the rising sun as the sun rays reach toward the edges of the design field.
This 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin is available in Mint State 64 condition. An MS64 coin has average luster with several small contact marks in clusters and one or two heavier marks.
