The New Orleans Mint was one of the more prolific producers of the Morgan Silver Dollar. The United States Mint issued the Morgan Dollar a total of 28 different years, with 27 of those occurring consecutively from 1878 to 1904. During the history of the series, New Orleans struck the coins in 26 of the 28 available dates. Right now, 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase online in certified condition.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin available here comes in Mint State 64 condition. Coins in this condition exhibit average mint luster for the age of the coin, with small contact marks clustered in groups, one or two heavier marks, and one or two small patches of hairlines.
The New Orleans Mint missed only two date marks in the Morgan Silver Dollar Series. When the program started in 1878, the New Orleans Mint had not reopened following its closure during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. It would strike coins annually from 1879 to 1904. The mint closed permanently in 1909, meaning it missed the final issue in 1921.
Obverse design elements on the 1902-O Morgan Dollar include a bust of Liberty in left-profile relief. In this 19th-century design, Liberty is shown with a laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair, as well as a Phrygian cap on her head.
Reverse visuals on 1902 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins include the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This version of the seal lacks a US national shield and features the eagle in front-facing relief with spread wings, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other.
