The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 required the US Treasury to purchase and coin a specific amount of silver each month. As such, the US Mint, with Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, created the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin. These coins were first minted from 1878-1904 and became the most popular coin program. The obverse of 1898-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins features the Lady Liberty design of George T. Morgan. She’s shown donning a Phrygian cap that symbolizes freedom. The issuing year, “E Pluribus Unum,” and 13 stars complete the design.
The reverse field of 1898-O Silver Dollars depicts a heraldic eagle design, also designed by George T. Morgan. The eagle is shown clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Identifying marks of the coin surround this bald eagle.
The New Orleans Mint struck Morgan Silver Dollar Coins from 1879-1904, minting a total of just north of 186 million. Morgan Silver Dollars were the first standard Silver Dollars issued after the Coinage Act of 1873 passed which ended the free coinage of silver. Both sides of these coins were designed by George T. Morgan, former Assistant Engraver.
