Over the course of the history of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, the Philadelphia Mint remained a constant. Each year these coins were struck between 1850 and 1907, the Philadelphia Mint had a hand in production of the coins. Its volume differed from year-to-year, but Philadelphia is the only branch mint that can say it issued the coins each time in the program’s history. Now, certified 1896 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The Liberty Head design featured on Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagles from 1850 to 1907 was created by James B. Longacre, who was serving as the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time of the coin’s design in 1849. Longacre drew inspiration for his Liberty Coronet design from his predecessor.
In 1838, 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint Christian Gobrecht created a similar Liberty Head design for use on the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations in this gold series. The Liberty Head design was used, in total across the series, for nearly 70 years, making it one of America’s longest-lived coin designs in circulation.
Obverse design elements on these 1896 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins include a left-profile bust of Liberty. She has flowing hair that is caught in a bun at the back of her head with a coronet crown on her head. There is a ring of 13 stars around the field and a date mark at the bottom.
Reverse visuals on the 1896 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle feature the Great Seal of the United States. An ornate twist on the heraldic eagle, this visual shows a front-facing eagle with wings spread as it supports the US national shield and clutches the arrows of war and olive branch of peace in its talons.
These 1896 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade showcase a slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks, a few heavier marks scattered on the field, and small hairlines visible without magnification.
