In 1873, the Bland-Allison Act of the U.S. Congress authorized the Treasury to obtain silver for the production of a new dollar coin. Initially struck in 1878, the Morgan Dollar was the first coin to enter circulation following the passage of this act. It was also the first coin to enter production following the Coinage Act of 1973, which eliminated the right of silver holders to have their bullion minted into coins. The classic Morgan was struck from 1878-1904, and then again in 1921 before the Peace Dollar took its place.
All 1896 Morgan Dollar Coins were struck in 90% silver by the United States Mint. The coins were later sent to the Professional Coin Grading Service for certification. Upon delivery, you will find your coin housed in a sturdy plastic slab that includes a label bearing the official grading details.
The obverse of these 1896 Silver Dollar Coins features the classic Lady Liberty portrait from George T. Morgan. Here, Ms. Liberty faces to the left while wearing a crown of wheat and a Phrygian cap. Inscriptions on the obverse read E Pluribus Unum, 1896.
On the reverse of these Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, there is an American bald eagle design. The national bird of America, the bald eagle is an iconic emblem of the country and the values she represents. Like the obverse portrait, this rendering is also credited to Mr. Morgan.
