Created in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was arguably the most successful US silver dollar design program. It succeeded the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar and was available for much longer than its successor, the Peace Silver Dollar. Today, 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In the 1880s, the production of Morgan Silver Dollars hit volumes that no other decade would see during the program’s history. The Philadelphia Mint was traditionally the branch mint that struck the most coins each year. The late 1880s showcased that impressive volume more so than any other period, with more than 19 million coins struck annually from 1886 to 1889.
All of these 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are in Mint State 63 condition. Coins with this grade have slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks and a few, scattered heavy marks. Other flaws include small hairlines and detracting scuff marks.
On the obverse of 1888 Morgan Silver Dollars, you will find George T. Morgan’s bust of Lady Liberty. The design featured here shows Liberty’s head in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and a laurel wreath on her head with 13 stars around the edge of the field.
The reverse side of the 1888 Morgan Dollar Coin is the heraldic eagle as created by Morgan. This version lacks a US national shield, but it does come with a front-facing bald eagle flexing its wings to the sides. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
