Initial production of the Morgan Silver Dollar came as a result of a massive silver deposit discovered in Nevada. Known as Comstock Lode, this deposit prompted the U.S. government to consider ways to utilize this sudden increase in the silver supply. Following the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the U.S. Mint was required to produce two million silver dollars each month. In March of that year, the Morgan Silver Dollar went into production at the Philadelphia branch.
