Production of the Seated Liberty Dollar ceased in 1873 following the Coinage Act. After a five-year hiatus, Congress enacted a new law requiring the Treasury to purchase silver once again for the production of a circulating dollar coin. U.S. Mint director Henry Linderman sought a fresh design for the coin and ultimately settled on the work of George T. Morgan, who at the time was the mint’s Assistant Engraver. The Morgan Silver Dollar officially entered production on March 11, 1878.
For the obverse of this Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, there is a bust of Lady Liberty. In this popular rendition from Mr. Morgan, we see Liberty facing to the left, a crown of wheat upon her head. She also dons a Phrygian cap and a band inscribed with the word “Liberty.” This portrait was modeled after real-life school teacher Anna Willess Williams of Philadelphia.
For the reverse of 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollars a bald eagle motif is featured. In this more naturalistic rendering, we do not see the shield that often appears on the bird’s chest. However, the motif does include the standard arrows and olive branch in the eagle’s talons. Reverse inscriptions read “United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.”
