For the reverse of 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollars an American eagle is depicted. Designed by George T. Morgan, this rendering shows the bird in a front-facing position, its head turned to the left. As symbols of war and peace, you will also see arrows and an olive branch in the bird’s talons.
The New Orleans branch of the U.S. Mint opened its doors in 1838 following the financial crisis known as the Panic of 1837. The branch then shut down during the Civil War, at which point it was occupied by Union troops led by Admiral David Farragut. The mint was later re-opened to facilitate demand for silver dollar production following the 1878 Bland-Allison Act. But when the Morgan Dollar went on a hiatus in 1904, the mint was no longer deemed necessary. Its doors were permanently closed in 1909.
