The Morgan Silver Dollar was the second design of three different US silver dollars. Morgan Dollars were available from 1878 to 1904 consecutively, and again in 1921 as the US Mint resumed silver dollar coining after a 17-year hiatus. In the mid-1880s, production of Morgan Silver Dollars experienced an overall uptick in volume. While not all branch mints saw volume increase, the overall numbers followed a general upward trend each year. At the Philadelphia Mint, the 1885 release saw some 17,787,000 coins struck compared to just 9,185,000 coins at the next closest mint (New Orleans).
All of these 1885 Morgan Silver Dollars are in Mint State 65 condition. Available in NGC plastic slabs, the coins have an attractive, high-quality mint luster for the date and will feature possible detractions that include small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks, as well as one or two small patches of hairlines and noticeable, light scuff marks.
On the obverse of the 1885 Morgan Dollar is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust captures Liberty with a Phrygian cap on her head, as well as the coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair. The field includes 13 stars and a date mark.
The reverse side of 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins comes with an image of the heraldic eagle. Both the obverse and reverse designs come from George T. Morgan, with the reverse showcasing the bald eagle in front-facing relief with widespread wings, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other.
