The coins will arrive to you in their original NGC holders that include a label bearing the official certification details.
The obverse of 1885 Morgan Silver Dollars contains a portrait of Lady Liberty. In this rendition, Ms. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief. You will also note that she is depicted from the neck-up, which is in line with the neoclassical style of the day. Upon Liberty’s head, you will find both a crown of wheat and a Phrygian cap, which is considered a symbol of freedom. Decorative stars and an inscription of the year of issue are also featured on the obverse.
On the reverse of these Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, a bald eagle is found. For this design, George T. Morgan studied the movements and forms of actual bald eagles. His efforts show, as this rendition appears more naturalistic and lifelike than the more rigid motifs common to American heraldry.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan at the behest of mint superintendent Henry Linderman. Charles Barber was also tasked with creating a design, but Linderman ultimately selected Morgan’s work for production. Morgan’s effigy of Lady Liberty was especially notable since he drew inspiration from an actual American woman (a school teacher from Philadelphia named Anna Williams) rather than the usual classical Greek art.
