In 1883, the New Orleans Mint was in its fifth year back in operation following the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. From 1879 to 1904, the mint would strike Morgan Silver Dollars on an annual basis, with some of those dates featuring far greater mintages than others. Right now, certified 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is available here in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade exhibit an attractive mint luster with only a few small, scattered contact marks or two larger contact marks. One or two small patches of hairlines may show on the coins as well.
The New Orleans Mint was opened in 1838 by the US Mint as one of three new branches designed to expand the capacity and reach of the mint. The New Orleans Mint was the southernmost branch the US Mint ever opened and it was operational from 1838 to 1861 and again from 1879 to 1909.
Obverse design elements on these 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins include the bust of Lady Liberty created by George T. Morgan. This image shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap on her head, along with the coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair. The field has a ring of 13 stars as well.
Reverse designs on the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin come with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. This design was also created by Morgan and shows the American bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
