In the 1830s, a financial crisis in the U.S. prompted the government to open the New Orleans Mint to help with a national coin shortage. When Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1861, the mint temporarily closed down before re-opening once the Civil War was concluded. While the mint would eventually close its doors permanently in 1909, the building still stands as part of the Louisiana State Museum, where it houses historic artifacts of the New Orleans jazz scene.
Each 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin is considered legal tender by the United States government. Crafted in 90% silver, these coins were later sent to the Professional Coin Grading Service for certification. Upon delivery, you’ll find yours housed in an original PCGS slab that includes a label bearing the official grade of Mint State 63.
The obverse of 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollars features Lady Liberty. In this effigy from George T. Morgan, we see Ms. Liberty looking left with a Phrygian cap and crown of wheat adorning her head. Inscriptions are featured as well reading “E Pluribus Unum, 1883.”
On the reverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, there is a bald eagle motif. Also designed by Morgan, this rendering shows America’s national bird with open wings as it holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Inscriptions on the reverse side read “United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.”
