To help facilitate production needs, U.S. Mint director Henry Linderman sent dies for the new Morgan Silver Dollar from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Mint. Production began at this Western branch on April 16th, 1878. To indicate this, each Morgan was stamped with a “S” mintmark on its reverse side. Today, the San Francisco location still stands as one of four active branches of the U.S. Mint.
When you purchase 1881-S Morgan Dollar Coins from JM Bullion, they will arrive in certified condition. Following a professional inspection, PCGS awarded these coins a grade of Mint State 63. The coins will ship in their original PCGS slabs, which include a label bearing the grading details.
Lady Liberty appears on the obverse of 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollars. Modeled after a school teacher named Anna Williams, this portrait shows Liberty looking left while wearing a Phrygian cap. She also wears a crown of wheat and a headband inscribed with the word “Liberty.” This design is credited to George T. Morgan, who completed it while serving as Assistant Engraver at the U.S Mint.
A bald eagle is shown on the reverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. Also designed by Morgan, this motif shows the bird with open wings as its head turns to the left. In the eagle’s talons are arrows and an olive branch. Surrounding the motif is a pair of laurels tied together with a ribbon.
