By 1881, the United States Mint was consistently striking the new Morgan Silver Dollars at four branch mints. While four mints were issuing the coins, the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint would go on to do the majority of the production during the program and would be the only locations to issue the coins each of the 28 years the series existed. Right now, certified 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available in this listing are Mint State 63 specimens. Coins in this condition exhibit impaired mint luster with scattered contact marks, a few heavier marks, and small patches of hairlines that are noticeable without the aid of magnification.
From 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921, the Philadelphia Mint issued the Morgan Silver Dollar each year. The only other branch mint of the US Mint to achieve this was the San Francisco Mint. In most years, the Philadelphia Mint was the largest producer of the coins.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of the 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar. This design from George T. Morgan shows the bust of Liberty in left-profile relief as she wears a Phrygian cap on her head. She also has a coronet crown and a laurel wreath on her head.
In the reverse design, the 1881 Morgan Dollar features yet another design from Morgan. This version of the heraldic eagle lacks a US national shield, but maintains the appearance of the American bald eagle in front-facing relief. With its wings spread, the eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
