The United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1878. The design from George T. Morgan replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar, a silver dollar last issued in 1873. There were only two mints to issue the Morgan Silver Dollar throughout its 28 years in production: Philadelphia and San Francisco. From 1878 to 1904, the United States Mint issued Morgan Silver Dollars on an annual basis. When the program started in 1878, Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco were operational and began striking the coins for the US Mint. One year later, the New Orleans Mint reopened following the Civil War and Reconstruction, and began issuing Morgan Dollars.
Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans would go on to strike the coins each year through 1904. Carson City would strike the coins until 1885 and again from 1889 to 1893. The Denver Mint issued the coins one time during the brief 1921 revival of the Morgan design. Over these 28 issue years, only Philadelphia and San Francisco struck the coins each time.
Obverse designs on the 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin include a bust of Lady Liberty. Created in 1878 by George T. Morgan, this image shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath on her head.
Reverse visuals on 1880 Morgan Dollar Coins feature the heraldic eagle of the United States. This image was also created by Morgan and shows the eagle in front-facing relief with spread wings. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
These 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in MS63 condition. Coins with this grade showcase impaired mint luster, scattered contact marks, a few heavier contact marks, and small patches of hairlines that are visible with the naked eye.
