The 1878 debut of Morgan Silver Dollars featured issues from the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint returned to production after a long hiatus during the US Civil War and the Reconstruction Era.
Mintage figures in 1879 were up compared to 1878, but not across the board. Philadelphia struck 14.8 million coins compared to 9.75 million in the year prior. San Francisco dropped slightly from 9.774 to 9.110 million in 1879. While the Carson City Mint dropped significantly from 2.212 million to 756,000 in 1879, the addition of 2.887 million coins at New Orleans helped significantly boost overall production in 1879 compared to 1878.
The obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar comes with a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1878 by George T. Morgan, this image shows the head of Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap on the back of her head. She is also shown wearing a coronet crown and laurel wreath in her hair.
On the reverse side of 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars, Morgan’s other design for the coin is featured. His version of the heraldic eagle lacks a US national shield, but it does show the front-facing bald eagle with its wings spread as its talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
These 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase in Mint State 65 condition. Coins with this grade showcase high-quality mint luster with either a few scattered small contact marks or two larger marks. One or two small patches of hairlines are possible, along with noticeable light scuff marks.
